Rising out of the very saturated Los Angeles hip hop scene is Korean-American emcee Dumbfoundead, who has been making quite a name for himself through various viral YouTube videos of his exploits as a battle rapper and his latest venture: a media collective/lifestyle brand known as Knocksteady. All of these efforts have lead up to his latest album titled DFD, which hit the #2 spot on iTunes during it’s week of release last month, shocking many as Dumb is an unsigned act that managed to accomplish this feat with the strong fan base he has built over the years.

DFD‘s production is very much in the realm of synthy boom-bap with splashes of alternative rock elements that give off a happy-go-lucky vibe throughout the album. Guest vocalists such as American Idol finalist Andrew Garcia and Breezy Lovejoy along with Dumbfoundead himself provide very catchy melodies and flows that have a lot of crossover appeal while maintaining a genuine everyman atmosphere in the track concepts. Many of the songs deal with the exploits of a young adult chasing after girls, good times and ambitions while also describing the society in which he exists in. The album appears to falter with its ability to relate once Dumb ventures into talking about being a musician. This perspective almost never works in general.

My favorite track off the album would definitely have to be “Cool and Calm”. The name matches the atmosphere of the track and is very easy to listen to and understand Dumb’s approach for the rest of DFD. Another track I’ve really grown to enjoy is one of the singles “BRB” featuring Andrew Garcia which is a more laid back version of a conventional braggadocious rap track. This record is highly recommended for fans of Kid Cudi, Mac Miller, other proponents of regular guy rap and just people that look for good lyrics from a down to earth artist.

One of the most original rappers of recent memory definitely has to be Gadsden, Alabama’s Yelawolf. The rapper has gained much notoriety for his penchant of combining unbelievable amounts of breath control into vividly hyperpoetic tales of living in the South, satiating thrill-seeking audiences while maintaining a brutal sense of realism over heavy Dirty South beats. Many rappers such as Kid Rock, Bubba Sparxx, Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit, etc. have attempted the aesthetic and demeanor that the artist also known as Catfish Billy has mastered: technically sophisticated white-trash (in a good way) rap. In a huge hype generating move, his critically acclaimed street album Trunk Muzik landed him a deal at the house that Marshall Mathers built: Shady Records for his debut commercial album, Radioactive. Yela makes it known that he is using this opportunity to hopefully expand his audience by trying out new approaches while incorporating the style that got him to where he is at.

The first half of the album is equivalent to an epic war zone of lyricism and banging beats as Wolf clearly goes for the throat with a flow highly reminiscent of Andre 3000 on the intro track, then upping the ante with a ridiculously vicious verse on the bouncy “Get Away”. The latter is a highlight track that really puts your mind into the Southern aesthetic due to the unique features being the groggy and grimey voiced Shawty Fatt along with the reinvigorated and newly signed YMCMB spitter Mystikal, rapping like he never left. Building upon the Southern imagery comes “Lets Roll” which features a hook by Kid Rock, who surprisingly adapts quite well to the modernized production to this unexpected anthem song. “Hard White”, “Growin Up In The Gutter” and “Throw It Up” all exude a progressed version of the style Yela crafted in Trunk Muzik all with very different soundscapes. The Lil Jon-assisted “Hard White” is the club banger “head bussa”, “Growin Up In The Gutter” fuses new age punk with almost dubstep-level synth and the Gangsta Boo and Eminem-assisted “Throw It Up” is one wild ride of lyricism over a dark minor key piano beat.

Once the second half of the album rolls through, the production becomes a little too ambitious and/or glossy for Yelawolf’s grit. Eminem jokingly brings in the transition into female-catered songs that come off as generic and playing a little too hard to Yela’s preconceived stereotypes as a rapping red-neck bad boy. These songs are weak enough to become entirely forgettable except for more highlights such as the satire of American society “Made In The U.S.A.”, another successful fusion of country, rock and southern hip hop in “Slumerican Shitizen” and the very personal letter to Yelawolf’s father “The Last Song”.

One can only imagine how much of a solid project Radioactive would have been if Yela had stuck to the execution present in the first half of the album. However, executive producer Eminem obviously felt that the experimental r&b tracks will expand his artist’s audience, which is really left to be seen as this seemed like an awkward switch up to an already critically successful formula.

Highlights: “Radioactive Intro”, “Get Away”, “Lets Roll”, “Throw It Up”, “Slumerican Shitizen”, “The Last Song”

Wiz Khalifa is currently building up a roster for his new Taylor Gang Records imprint and veteran rapper Juicy J of Three 6 Mafia has revealed that he has signed to the label. The two artists have frequently collaborated in the past on Wiz’s critically acclaimed Kush & Orange Juice, Cabin Fever and Juicy J’s Rubbaband Business mixtapes along with a remix of Wiz’s hit single “Black & Yellow”. Last month, Khalifa signed Washington D.C rapper/model Lola Monroe to his label, so as it stands, Wiz has a very experienced artist in Juicy J and a female figure in Lola Monroe along with Wiz’s own artistic appeal which is building up anticipation to what Taylor Gang Records has to offer. This news strikes numerous parallels with Lil Wayne recently signing a veteran in Busta Rhymes and also having a strong female figure in Nicki Minaj for the Young Money Entertainment label. Taylor Gang is working on a compilation album due for release some time in 2012.

Without a doubt, Canadian hip hop artist Drake has his own lane that many admire but few can attempt to venture into. Combining catchy melodies with a sharp rap pen game, other artists trying it out either come off as half-hearted or just lacking overall. While critically acclaimed and commercially successful, the former Degrassi actor continues to be one of the most polarizing figures in hip hop today due to his ability to make technically and stylistically sound music yet have it permeated with an overkill of emotions and vulnerability as opposed to the tough guy bravado present in the majority of hip hop. On his sophomore effort Take Care, the follow up to his debut Thank Me Later on Young Money Entertainment, Drake embraces and indulges in the trend of rappers imitating his formula along with his personal success and uses it to fuel a strong sense of arrogance throughout the album.

As far as artistic growth from his last album is concerned, Drake continues to stay in the lane he created for himself and remains safe within those boundaries. Relationship angst, hunger for (continued) success, female-catered ballads, and boastful declarations made to haters and rivals are Drake’s proven fortes, and what is expected is delivered on Take Care.

One can either enjoy or get completely turned off by Drake’s sometimes unfounded and pretentious sense of pride, as there is a wide array of excellent artists in the hip hop genre these days that can lay claim to the boasts he makes on songs such as the ethereal yet vengeful opening track “Over My Dead Body”. A majority of the album personally left me wondering exactly what he is so mad at other than past loves, doubters and people that just dislike his music. There is never a moment where he analyzes the real problems of the world that affect him, but once again, Drake chooses to stay safe in his prime zone. While being personal in your music is always welcome to a listener, personal music business talk, which is all over this album, heavily alienates anybody from relating.

The highlights of the album occur when Drake provides alternate and ambitious perspectives to his strengthened fortes. Sonically, anything Drake and fellow Canadian crooner The Weeknd collaborate on results in effective experimental r&b rap, as the more Weeknd than Drake track “Crew Love” and album closer “The Ride” are prime examples of this chemistry. Previously released single “Marvin’s Room” combines Drake’s boastful and romantic angst together very well and closes out with a refreshing and unconventional verse from one of the West’s brightest, Kendrick Lamar on “Buried Alive (Interlude)”. Relatively recluse producer Just Blaze returns to the limelight to provide the most outstanding beat of the entire album on “Lord Knows”; a rather adventurous sound selection for Drake that perfectly fits his arrogant verbiage. Ambitious beat selection fails on the the album’s title track featuring Rihanna, which comes off as a misplaced full blown pop/techno fusion experiment gone wrong. After a slew of dreary and lackluster female-centered tracks (including a Stevie Wonder harmonica section, a strangely smooth Lex Luger beat, Andre 3000 and Nicki Minaj cameos and more), the killswitch is flipped when Drake and Lil Wayne relentlessly attack on “HYFR” and prove just how effective a duo album by the two would be, despite yet more relationship angst on the track.

Drake sums up his motivation with “Look What You’ve Done”, an ode to the struggles his parents went through and how he appreciates them then and now. With this in mind, his confidence is somewhat justified, though the ability to negate the faults in his calling card concepts is something he definitely needs to work on for his junior and senior albums, which in “The Ride” he says will “get meaner.”

Highlights: “Crew Love”, “Marvin’s Room/Buried Alive”, “Lord Knows”, “HYFR”

Hip hop heads and music media all over the world were caught in a well-calculated storm of hype as soon as Harlem, NY up and comer A$AP Rocky was reported to have been signed for $3 million to Polo Grounds Records, a subdivision of Sony/RCA. This statement resulted in an astounding expectation and at times, exaltation of his recent release, the LiveLoveA$AP mixtape. The truth of the matter is that Rocky merely stated the sum of investments that will gradually be executed throughout his contract. Bryan Leach, the founder of Polo Grounds Records, had choice words to clear the air about the whole ordeal:

“What he was saying was, when you look at his deal, between the marketing, the promotion, the A&R budget, the advance, the life of the deal—this is what it comes up to,” Leach told XXL. “It’s no different than an NBA contract if you factor in bonuses. It was definitely a competitive deal, and it was worth every penny, but it wasn’t 3 million dollars in his pocket.”

Though Leach has refused to state the exact amount of initial money deposited into Rocky’s bank account, he did state that many if not all record labels were approaching the 23 year old rapper in hopes of signing him.
