In a scene straight out of How High, Tupac’s former rap group the Outlawz finally confirmed thelong standing  rumors that they smoked Pac’s ashes after his cremation. Vlad TV, E.D.I. Mean, Young Noble and Hussein Fatal say they cut weed with the late rapper’s ashes and smoked them at a beach memorial.

“Yes, it’s definitely true. Think it was the night of his… Had a little memorial for him with his mom and his family and shit. We had hit the beach, threw [in] a lot of shit he liked at the beach. Some weed, some chicken wings, he loved orange soda, all that kind of shit, ‘Pac loved that kind of shit, so we were giving him our own farewell and that night, I forgot which one of us came up with it. Had his ashes and shit. […] We twisted up some of that great granddaddy California kush and mixed the big homie with it. Flowing through our system, you heard?” Said Young Nobel in a recent interview.

E.D.I. Mean claims the  idea was his getting the idea from a  line off his track “Black Jesus.”

“I came up with that shit,” said E.D.I. Mean. “If you listen to ‘Black Jesus,’ he said, ‘Last wishes, niggas smoke my ashes.’ That was a request that he had. Now, how serious he was about it? We took it serious.”

In a video posted on his website, Waits explained how he feels about people leaking his albums before proper release, “Apparently there’s no such thing as private anymore…What if your wife was pregnant, and wanted to tell you she was pregnant…What if I spoiled your surprise? Would you be ok with that or what if you had root cancel and I asked you to gargle with root canal?” I would wait on the October 25th release date if you don’t want Mr. Waits showing up at your door with a dentist’s drill people.

According to loureedmetallica.com the record will have a November 1rtst release in the States and international release of October 31. Lou Reed is quoted as saying “It’s maybe the best thing done by anyone, ever. It could create another planetary system. I’m not joking, and I’m not being egotistical.” In an interview with Vulture. Let’s hope it lives up to the hype.

Album Review: Mister Heavenly – Out of Love http://thesilvertongueonline.com/2011/08/album-review-mister-heavenly-out-of-love/ http://thesilvertongueonline.com/2011/08/album-review-mister-heavenly-out-of-love/#comments Tue, 16 Aug 2011 06:20:21 +0000 Sam Wilson http://thesilvertongueonline.com/?p=36424

So Honus Honus of Man Man, Nicholas Thorburn of the Islands and Unicorns, Joe Plummer of Modest Mouse, and George Michael walk into a studio. Sounds like a joke for indie kids but it happened. Ok, so not George Michael, but Michael Cera did act as their touring bassist. Anyway this new “super” group is called Mister Heavenly, their album is Out of Love, and they play something they call Doom Wop. According to the band’s website, Doom Wop “is a state of mind rather than a nitpicky micro-genre. It is born from a shared love of 1950s vocal-based R&B classics by ensembles like the Penguins, the Platters, and the Moonglows, and also a fascination with ill-fated romance.” It sounds pretty good in theory. I mean every rock nerd loves the Platters and heartache.  I’m guessing the objective is to sound like Phil Spector getting in a fight with the Cramps, but unfortunately this is a fight no one really wins, including the listener.

Now I adore Man Man, I love Modest Mouse, and I thought the Islands Return to Sea was one of best albums of 2006 (we won’t mention Arm’s Way. It’s my opinion that it’s best for everyone that that particular train wreck be forgotten), so I was understandably excited when I first heard about Mister Heavenly. Anything Man Man related has to be good, right? Was I expecting the album to match the sum of its parts? No, of course not, but I have to admit I expected more than this. It’s almost like the producer had a button to hit with each respective band members “sound” on it. The whole thing sounds comes off calculated and little hollow rather than organic. Most of the songs aren’t necessarily bad. They just come off kind of water down. It pretty much sounds like either Honus Honus singing a Man Man song with a dash of Islands or Nicholas Thorburn singing an Islands song with a bit Man Man.  The outcome isn’t terrible but, it’s not particularly exciting either. The main problem with the album is that it lacks the beautiful chaos I love so much in Man Man songs, or the quirkiness of one of the better Islands songs, and it certainly lacks the song writing of Modest Mouse (but hey no one invited Issac Brock right?).  It’s a little bit like listening to a vaccinated version of your favorite bands.  “I am a Hologram” somehow manages to be catchy and utterly boring at the same time.  “Pineapple Girl”  and the aptly titled “Doom Wop” end before they really have a chance to go anywhere. “Wise Men” was mind blowing in it’s forgetfulness. It was hard to pay attention to the song even when it was playing.  I think “Diddy Girl” is only the track I straight up hated. It was swampy in all the wrong ways and had some misplaced dissonance that didn’t help the attempts at old school harmonizing.

Ok, Ok, Ok, not everything is bad here. I have to admit when something does work for Mister Heavenly, it works pretty damn well. For instance the lead track “Bronx Sniper” has a wonderful bouncy guitar and piano riff and an amazing catchy chorus/verse interchange that show off both singers’ talents.  Honus Honus’s “Charlyne” has a grown up sound Man Man could have used on Life Fantastic. “Harm You” is better than any track on the Island’s Vapors and “Hold My Hand” is a lot of fun while it lasts. “Reggae Pie” is pretty kickass despite its weird fade towards the end (I think the guys where making some attempt at dub).

Alright, maybe I was a little too hard on these guys. Maybe I set my expectations too high. If I had never heard of Man Man or the Islands it’s quite possible my mind would have been blown by Out of Love. I expect more from these guys. I’ve heard songs like “Diamonds” and “Feathers” and I know they can do better. Maybe Honus Honus and Thorburn like each other to much to make a great album. There’s too much collaboration. No one wanting to step on someone else’s toes, No one wanting to take the lead. We end up without a strong solid voice from Mister Heavenly, just the ghost of other bands.  If you’re looking for something to hold you over till the next Man Man release (or until the Islands release something worth listing to) you may want to pick this up, but I think it’s a better idea to just fire up Six Demon Bag or Return to Sea instead.  You’ll be happy you did.

Before the band took the stage, a heavy storm swept the ground of the festival causing the rig to collapse, and although no one was hurt, around $800,000 of the bands equipment was destroyed.

Lead singer Wayne Coyne is said to have rushed on stage almost immediately after the accident, helping crew members salvage any undamaged equipment.  He told NewsOK, “The Oklahoma wind and rain was a little bit more unpredictable than we had hoped, and we had a bad gust. The whole thing is shambolic and a bit dangerous and we’re working to get as much off of the stage before we get hit with the second wave.” No word  yet on if this will affect future Lips tour dates.

John Lydon and the boys have teamed up the the U.K.’s National Trust to produce a fundraising album to preserve their nation’s ancestral treasures. In their heyday, they were known for their foul language and ability to destroy a stage set.

The album, by Decca Records, is titled Never Mind the Dovecotes and features classic punk acts The Jam, X-Ray Spex, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sham 69, The Fall as well as poet John Cooper Clarke.

Kevin Long, who compiled the record for Decca Records said, “When punk rock hit British society in the late Seventies, it was met by the Establishment’s distrust and disgust. Today, the influence of the punk movement on British fashion and music is incalculable.”

I’m not sure what I was doing at the Exit/In last Sunday. I mean I know I was there to cover The Get Up Kids show, but why had I decided to cover this show? I guess the short answer is nostalgia. Growing up I adored this band. In high school, and my early twenties, Something To Write Home About was a constant in my CD collection, but I’m not a young man anymore. I’m pushing thirty and haven’t listened to a Get Up Kids record in years. The band members themselves must be in their late thirties at least. How would the teenage antics of Four Minute Mile About sound coming out of an adult’s mouth into an adult’s ears?  These guys play Emo music for Christ’s sake, which let’s face it, is a teenager’s medium. To be fair  the “Emo” music The Get Up Kids play doesn’t sound like the music of contemporary emo bands. They have more in common with “indie” bands Weezer and Deathcab for Cutie than say Paramore or My Chemical Romance. You have to remember way back in the 1996, when the band formed, Emo wasn’t such a bad word.

As I walked in The Globes were already playing. On their newest album The Globes sound like a spacey post rock band, but live they sound straight up like a prog-rock band, right out of 1974. They even played a Yes song,  not to say that’s entirely a terrible thing. I enjoyed the angular guitars on “Haunted by Bears”, and it was pretty fun to watch one of their three singers bash the shit out of an ancient Korg, but the breathy vocals featured on “Stay Awake” came off as creepy instead of moody. While interesting at first, the math-rock drumming became pretty tedious after a few minutes. At the end of their set someone in the audience yelled “play Tom Sawyer” to which the guitarist fired back with a “fuck you.”  The band left the stage quickly without fanfare, and left me with a feeling that maybe things did not go completely as planned tonight.

When The Get Up Kids took the stage the mood of the audience quickly shifted. The awkwardness of The Globes quick departure from the stage was instantly changed to elation, as pasty kids in their mid to late twenties saw their teenage heroes up close.  The band looked a little different than I expected. Who were these podgy guys in skinny jeans? Oh yeah, this wasn’t 1996 anymore, gone were the svelte indie stars of my youth, but as the band ripped into their set I realized something. Yes these guys were older, but they had also matured.

Much has been said about the band’s change of sound featured on 2010’s There are Rules. I found myself digging the change as well as the newer songs. “Rally ‘Round The Fool” had nice slinky bass line that worked well with the starkness of the lyrics and “Tithe” had raw stripped down toughness I had never heard in the band before. In an interview with website Drowned in Sound, Guitarist Jim Suptick said, “The punk scene we came out of and the punk scene now are completely different. It’s like glam rock now. If this is the world we helped create, then I apologize.” If the quote is any indication of how the rest of the band feels, it explains the new direction the band is taking.

Although the crowd seemed to like the new material the response was nothing compared to when the band would play something off of Four Minute Mile or Something To Write Home About. Sometimes it was hard to hear singer Matt Pryor over the legions of fans singing along with him. The band may be trying to change their image and sound, but if you asked the overly enthusiastic kid that stood next to me, he would tell you “the new stuff is OK, but it’s the classics that get inside you.”

So yeah, maybe The Get Up Kids are a little old to be singing a lyric like “Every mistake that I make/I couldn’t have made without you” but they seem to know that. When you’re young, middle age seems like a distant impossibility and maturity sounds like a bad joke. Every heart ache is the end of your life and love is eternal. There will always be teenagers to identify with the melodramatic struggles found in songs like “Action & Action” or “Don’t Hate Me” even when the band that sang those very songs no longer do.

So what was I doing at the Exit/In last Sunday? I was watching a piece of my past, I was watching a band grow up and also I was having a pretty good time.

Damian Abraham doesn’t look like an American; he doesn’t even really look Canadian. He looks more like someone shaved a bear and pushed it on stage. Abraham fronts the Canadian hardcore band Fucked Up who are currently touring in support of its newest album David Comes To Life. Thursday night the band stopped in Nashville to play The Exit/In. Loud isn’t the word to describe that night. Three days after the show my ears are still ringing.

The album itself is a concept album that tells the story of a factory worker named David Eliade, who falls in love with a woman named Veronica Boisson. Together they build a bomb and in the resulting death and destruction, they ultimately find peace. Like most concept albums, the plot is a bit hard to follow, but it’s impossible not to hear the frustration and anger in Abraham’s voice. Whatever this man is trying to say he goddamn means it.

Before Fucked Up took the stage that night, there were two opening acts, JEFF the Brotherhood and Nashville’s own Diarrhea Planet. Diarrhea Planet is a six man group of power-pop gutter punks that play their craft fast, loud, and hard. The band has a strong almost cult-like following here in Nashville. Several people in the audience were holding signs that read “Ghost With a Boner” which is the title of what most people would call the band’s hit, if bands named Diarrhea Planet had hits. At one point the lead guitarist shouted, “OK, don’t move during this one! This one’s too fast to move to!” before jumping feet first into the crowd and playing a blazing solo on the sticky floor of the venue. It was around this time I took a shoe to the head from some stage diving hipster bitch. I’ve never been so proud a band was from Nashville.

JEFF the Brotherhood is also from Nashville, yet another animal all together, a duo of brothers that plays a bluesy mix of stoner metal and garage punk. I found myself instantly liking them, despite their ironic mustaches and hipster detachment. The two brothers played their set lit by only a single drop lamp and a few red gelled stage lights. As the fog rolled in and  the sonic bath from “Hey Friend”  flooded my ears, I found myself instantly transported to some mutant 1970′s basement gig. Singer and guitarist, Jake Orrall, stalked the stage like a wounded animal looking ready to lash out at any moment, while his brother Jamin kept perfect time and his cool like an ultra shaggy version of Charlie Watts. A kid with eyes of jellied fire turned to me towards the end of the set and said, “This is great. I hope this lasts for ever…” I think he was talking about the music and not whatever hillbilly drugs he had shoved down his throat that evening. Either way, I totally agreed with him.

When Fucked Up finally took the stage, I have to admit I was shocked at how normal they all looked, dare I say dorky? In a different setting they could have been a couple of friends ready to sit around and play some Sega and maybe smoke some pot, but as Mike Haliechuk began to play the opening riff to “Queen of Hearts”, something happened. The seemingly dorky Canadians turned into men and women of purpose with Abraham leading them in a sonic assault on the audience that either left people running for cover or crying for more. This band wasn’t playing a show – they were going to war and they weren’t taking any prisoners. “All right Nashville, How many real country music agents are out there? Do I got what it takes?” Abraham asked the audience before tearing off his shirt  and tearing into “David”. The question was supposed to be a joke, but it came off more as a challenge.

Despite the confrontation found in Fucked Up’s music and Abraham’s stage presence, one can tell the band genuinely loves its fans. Several times throughout the night Abraham leaped from the stage to bear hug fans, sometimes even handing off the mike to an unsuspecting audience member who would scream a few lyrics before passing the mike back. Abraham has been quoted as saying in a recent interview with The New York Press, “The record exists in one world and the live show in another. You’re never going to be able to replicate the record exactly live, so why not make the live show as exciting and visceral as possible?” and that night’s show was held true to the rule. Throughout the band’s set there was an ever-present feeling of chaos, excitement, and sense of mutual respect. I hope some of that feeling was somehow able to spill into the real world.

Towards the end of the night, Abraham climbed up on the bar and announced the last song. The band tore into a lightning fast version of “Son of a Father”. The real pit mothers came out windmilling, trying to damage each other into another plane of existence. When the music faded and the lights went up I noticed one kid cradling an amp as it were a child he was trying to protect. He had his head pressed hard to the speaker, his face a mixture of pleasure and pain. Maybe he been hoping to find some transcendence in the music, or maybe he was just holding on for dear life.
