Lana Del Rey: Born To Sell?

lanadelrey

By the time you are reading this, Lana Del Rey’s album Born To Die will have reached #2 on the Billboard charts, and #1 in a gazillion countries. In a true sign that she’s made it, she will have been mocked on Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update,” impersonated no less by Kristen Wiig, just a week after her controversial appearance on the show. You have probably bought the album, or illegally downloaded it, or have heard every track just by skipping around the Sirius dial. You don’t … [Read more...]

Interview: Shelby Lynne of The Black Belles

BlackBelles_flaggroup2

The Black Belles are a Nashville based foursome. Jack White is often credited for the discovery and rising indie-fame of the group, though I think he and Third Man Records simply beat everyone to the punch. The Black Belles have been described as ‘garage goth’ by several. They drag dirty, vintage rock to a place that is uniquely dark and sonically haunting, yet hooky. So, it’s a fair description. The Black Belles are Olivia Jean (vocals, guitar), Ruby Rogers (bass), Shelby Lynne (drums) … [Read more...]

Interview: William Cashion of Future Islands

futureislands2

As you might guess, I’m a pretty big fan of Future Islands. I became aware of the trio’s existence just before their LP, In Evening Air, came out in 2010. Their consistent touring habits and push to create and release interesting, uniquely styled, emotionally driven, danceable, electro-gelled tunes keeps me on edge, and has rightfully earned them some good recognition over the past couple of years. This past Saturday I had the opportunity to check out the sights and sounds of the Athens … [Read more...]

Is This the End of Megaupload and File-Sharing?

FBI_Anti-Piracy_Warning

As previously reported, on Thursday file-sharing giant Megaupload was shut down by the federal government, with the assist going to record and film company execs. The site was indicted for piracy, accused of, "costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content." While this is upsetting, it's not surprising. In fact, I'm surprised that it took the government so long to do it. Megaupload, like it's predecessors, is a victim of it's own … [Read more...]

Janey Criss Assistant Editor Artist: Destroyer Album: Kaputt Comments: This is the most Eighties-sounding record I’ve heard all year. It’s got modern production tidbits, yes, but they do what modern technology is supposed to – replicate analog devices, less the noise that they sometimes bring. These nine songs are so damn chill-pop. It’s the same easy-listen-ability that Twin Shadow brings us, but minus the emotional tension (make of that what you will; I love it both ways). This … [Read more...]

Miya Bailey and Artemus Jenkins Presents: Color Outside The Lines: A Tattoo Documentary (Review)

tattoo

My generation is completely enthralled by the idea of being "inked" up and turning their bodies into a canvas representing and embodying everything they believe and stand for. It's almost common to see someone with not just one, but multiple tattoo's. With that said, Miya Bailey (Visual Artist/Co-owner of City Of Ink) & Artemus Jenkins' (Director) documentary couldn't come at a better time. Spotlighting a side of the culture that has been in the dark: the struggles, hardship, and overall … [Read more...]

Carlos Reyes Contributor Artist: Gotye Album: Making Mirrors Comments: Last week I was browsing for new music specifically for this column. I wasn’t paying much attention to what I was listening to, but then I heard this amazing song titled “Somebody I Used to Know”. You know how people always say “this song was written for me?” Well, I say it too, but it’s usually bullsh*t, but this song? This song I can actually relate to. Other stand outs on Making Mirrors are “In Your … [Read more...]

The Brit Awards: A Confused and Strange Affair

The 32nd Annual Brit Award Ceremony is soon to be upon us, and the general reaction of most seems somewhat muted. The Brit's always seem to confuse and often bewilder me; a horrifically pompous and grandiose ceremony celebrating, essentially, the most commercially successful artists of the year. It's more or less the antithesis to the Mercury Prize; the sound of the hollow sprawling, echoing nothingness of it all is almost deafening. However of recent years, the Brit's have become something a … [Read more...]
