Lana Del Rey: Born To Sell?

lanadelrey

By the time you are reading this, Lana Del Rey’s album Born To Die will have reached #2 on the Billboard charts, and #1 in a gazillion countries. In a true sign that she’s made it, she will have been mocked on Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update,” impersonated no less by Kristen Wiig, just a week after her controversial appearance on the show. You have probably bought the album, or illegally downloaded it, or have heard every track just by skipping around the Sirius dial. You don’t … [Read more...]

Is This the End of Megaupload and File-Sharing?

FBI_Anti-Piracy_Warning

As previously reported, on Thursday file-sharing giant Megaupload was shut down by the federal government, with the assist going to record and film company execs. The site was indicted for piracy, accused of, "costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content." While this is upsetting, it's not surprising. In fact, I'm surprised that it took the government so long to do it. Megaupload, like it's predecessors, is a victim of it's own … [Read more...]

The Brit Awards: A Confused and Strange Affair

The 32nd Annual Brit Award Ceremony is soon to be upon us, and the general reaction of most seems somewhat muted. The Brit's always seem to confuse and often bewilder me; a horrifically pompous and grandiose ceremony celebrating, essentially, the most commercially successful artists of the year. It's more or less the antithesis to the Mercury Prize; the sound of the hollow sprawling, echoing nothingness of it all is almost deafening. However of recent years, the Brit's have become something a … [Read more...]

Year In Review: Hip Hop in 2011

best-of-logo

Widely regarded as an unforgiving, volatile, and sometimes bleak genre, Hip Hop experienced one of it's brightest years in 2011. Fundamentals were kept intact while many innovations in the scene pushed the boundaries and increased potential for this culture made out of cultures. While Adele, Lady Gaga and other popular artists topped the charts, hip hop artists maintained their status in the industry by either dominating first week sales or participating in extensive touring. While there were … [Read more...]

Top 25 albums of 2011

best-of-logo1

Our very talented writer James Brightman recently wrote up his top 20 albums of the year, and fellow writer and long time friend of mine Michael Starr is about to write his. All due respect to those two, but neither of them know what they're talking about and this is definitely the right list and you may as well not even read the others. Or, at least, I should make very clear it's my top 25 anyway. I'm Will. Hey. Writing this listed proved to be a tad more difficult than I originally thought … [Read more...]

A Hard Rock Christmas Song Revisited By…Walt Disney?

Newnightmarerevisited

The holidays always bring back fond memories, and one of those is Rise Against's "Making Christmas". According to purevolume.com, you can never have too many variations of a holiday song, and I agree. The rock band covered "Making Christmas" from A Nightmare Before Christmas, for New Nightmare Revisited by Walt Disney Records back in 2008, and in my opinion, it came out a success, and still continues to be a success to the point where I just can't get enough. Personally, I love the … [Read more...]

Where are the Wives?

VH1-Basketball-Wives-Season-4

There’s a common theme in this never-ending string of reality shows centered on wives…most of these chicks aren’t married. I’ve sat through The Real Housewives franchise, and Basketball Wives franchise and Love & Hip-Hop and where are the wives? Yes, a few are married but most aren’t. And some never have been. The shows are stacked with groupies and gold diggers who’ve made a name for themselves bedding married men, so why are they on the show? Is there a shortage of real … [Read more...]

The Best TV of 2011 (That No One’s Watching)

best-of-logo

Those of you who read The Underground will know that I'm all about spreading the word of undiscovered quality. However, as I adorned my hipster-cape to write this “Best TV No One's Watching” list, something really quite sad hit me, really hard. I think if I were simply writing a “Best of TV” list, it would be pretty much exactly the same as this one, except for the additions of Mad Men, Homeland and Boardwalk Empire (Boy did the latter of really step its game up this year!). A common … [Read more...]
