Dream Forever Through ‘Lost Trails’ by Butterfly Explosion

Lost Trails, the Butterfly Explosion’s full length debut, feels like a dream from which you never want to wake – “If you miss it, we can dream forever.”  The breathy vocals in “Closer,” the dreampop rhythm in “Tracing Stars,” the lulling calls in “Sofia,” all have you floating in bliss.  The delicate beauty portrayed in these tracks is complemented by the shoegaze art rock style in “Chemistry” and the fantastic wall of noise in “Carpark.”

This Dublin band has thus far released two critically acclaimed EPs.  They’ve toured from Dublin to London and New York to Toronto with bands such as Howling Bells, God Is An Astronaut, 65daysofstatic, and others.  Butterfly Explosion began recording Lost Trails over a year ago, meanwhile contributing songs to compilation releases in the UK by Invada Records (“The Secret Garden – the new wave of shoegaze”) and Northern Star Records (“Psychedelica 3″).

The band presents excellent experimentation in “Crash/…see you on the other side” with a lengthy two and a half minute outro – going from screeching pulsing guitars to radiating noise to piano solo.  Even the instrumental tracks like the finale, “Warmer Moment,” tell a stunning story with groaning bass notes offset by high bell tings.

Every song contributes something new while maintaining its own beauty – much like the collective yet individual splendor of a butterfly explosion.
