Even though Childish Gambino sounds like synonym for Benjamin Button’s disease, it’s actually actor/comedian/writer Donald Glover’s stage name. Most will know him from NBC’s psuedo hit sitcom The Community (which is starting its 3rd season September 22nd), one of the many writers on the television show 30 rock, or his Comedy Central stand-up special, but recently he’s been making noise online for his music.
Finding his name using a Wu-Tang name generator, (where else would you get a combination like childish and gumbo) he’s been releasing music steadily since 2008. Fast forward 6 albums, 1 EP,and 1 mini tour and he has slowly became one of the most talked about up and comers (he even made Complex’s list of 15 rappers to watch for), known for his witty lyrics and stunning production (yes he makes all his own beats).
Once his name joined the list of many elite artist for the Rock The Bell’s tour it was only a matter of time before Childish Gambino became a household name, and since he recently signed to Glassnote Records it seems like it will be sooner than later before the young 27 year-old artist is a household name.
His next album entitled “Camp” is scheduled to be released November 1st and Bonfire is the very first single from the project. He does exactly what he is known for, punchline after punchline with a pretty simple chorus. Kind of reminds me of a 06 Lil Wayne, if Weezy got bullied in high school and was 10x’s more canny. One of the biggest worries that come with Childish Gambino is that he can be one dimensional at times, even with all the clever wordplay, how many times can he really talk about all his Asian women and how annoying his voice is?
Either way I think Gambino is talented, and I think Camp is one of the albums you should watch out for. Down below you will find a stream of Bonfire. Listen, comment, and enjoy.
