Levon Helm, drummer and singer for The Band, has died. He was 71.

Helm, who was diagnosed with throat cancer in the 1998, passed away this afternoon in New York, surrounded by friends and family, according to a statement from his label, Vanguard Records.

“He was surrounded by family, friends and band mates and will be remembered by all he touched as a brilliant musician and a beautiful soul,” the statement said.

Last night, his wife and daughter posted a statement on The Band’s website stating that drummer was in the “final stages” of cancer, and thanking fans for their prayers and support.
