Listen: The Gaslight Anthem – “45″

The Gaslight Anthem will be back this summer with a new album, and “45” is the first taste off it.  The young Jersey heroes of the garage dish out another impeccably habit-forming three-minute rock cut heavy on guitars, towering hooks and Brian Fallon’s ravenous growls and howls. The new album, Handwritten, is due out in the thick of summer on July 23 courtesy of Mercury Records. I’ll double-down a few months in advance to put my paycheck on The Gaslight Anthem being the kings of my humid summer soundtrack.

I have nothing short of substantial expectations.  Gaslight are a rock and roll band with boots thick in tradition, heart-on-sleeve vigor and a total lack of pretension, and such a thing is always a welcome presence in my life. The ’59 Sound and American Slang both tore through my speakers like a ’57 Chevy through The Heartland, and there’s no part of me with any concern of Handwritten taking a backseat with tunes like “45.”

To cynical music critics and to the sentimentally adverse, sharpen your daggers. To everyone else, pump up the volume and dig in to the sort of song that allowed our heroes and us to fall in love with rock and roll in the first place.
