NFL Legend Junior Seau Found Dead

Former NFL star Junior Seau was found dead Wednesday in his California home, officials said. He was 43.

According to the NFL news website, the Oceanside, Calif, police said Seau died of a gunshot wound to the chest in an apparent suicide.  He was found unconscious, suffering from the wound, by a woman who said was his girlfriend.

“Life-saving measures were performed, but were unsuccessful,” the NFL site reported.  The San Diego Charges have released a statement regarding his death. “”Everyone at the Chargers is in complete shock and disbelief right now. We ask everyone to stop what they’re doing and send their prayers to Junior and his family,” the statement from the Chargers reads.

The details of the shooting were not immediately released. The San Diego County Corner’s office said  it would issue a release regarding the ongoing investigation no later than 3 p.m. PT.

Seau ended his career in 2009, after playing 20 years in the NFL — 13 in San Diego, three in Miami and four in New England.  He was selected to 12 Pro Bowls and was named first-team All-Pro six times.

A graduate of Oceanside High School, he was drafted fifth overall out of USC by the Chargers in 1990.
