Taylor Swift’s New Album ‘Red’ Hits Stores October 22; New Single ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’

Taylor Swift, 22, promised fans “cool news” last week when she announced her August 13th webcast and she did not disappoint. The popular country cross-over artist released the artwork, title and release date of her fourth studio album Red.  The disc, which drops October 22nd, features a whopping 16 songs including a duet with Ed Sheeran.

Swift used the web chat to give fans an insight into the album’s title. “[The songs are] all pretty much about the kind of tumultuous, crazy, insane, intense, semi-toxic relationships that I’ve experienced in the last two years. All those emotions spanning from intense love, intense frustration, jealousy, confusion, all of that, in my mind all those emotions are red. There’s nothing in between. There’s nothing beige about any of those feelings.”

Unlike Swift’s previous multi-platinum smash Speak Now, which the singer wrote all on her own, Red features collaborations with a number of writers and artists including Mark Foster of Foster the People, Dan Wilson, Butch Walker, Lori McKenna, Max Martin and Johan Shellback. In fact, it was the latter two that penned Swift’s catchy new single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”

Swift humorously labeled the track as “a really romantic song that’s to my lovely ex-boyfriend.” In an interview with ABC, Swift revealed that it was a run in with a friend of her ex’s while in the studio that inspired her, Martin and Shellback to write the song. “He starts talking about how he’s heard we were getting back together and that was not the case. When he leaves, Max and Johan are like, ‘so what’s the story behind that?’ And so I start telling them the story of break up, get back together, break up, get back together, just, ugh, the worst.”

“Max says, ‘this is what we’re writing. We’re writing this song,’ and I picked up the guitar and just started singing, ‘we are never–. It just happened so fast. It was so much fun.”

Swift also revealed that a tour is in the works, details of which will be announced in the coming months.

“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” hasn’t been out for a week yet and it already become the fastest selling digital single in history, topping the record set by Lady Gaga’s anthem “Born This Way.”
