Cody Critcheloe is the mustachioed maestro behind SSION (pronounced “shun”), the electro-pop group whose music should come with a warning label: you will get weird on the dance floor until the sun comes up. While the band’s existence can be traced back to Critcheloe’s high school days in mid-90s Kansas City, his recent move to Brooklyn and the subsequent release of 2011′s Bent should mark their rise to “buzz-worthy” status.
Bent is sexy, 80s-inspired electronic music that will draw comparisons to early Madonna, but it’s more on the fringe—the music is as free-flowing as the sexual ambiguity embedded in the lyrics, videos and Critcheloe’s garb. With a head-turning live act and music perfect for our crumbling society (it’s partying-as-the-world-ends fun), SSION is catching fire as they embark on a nationwide tour. On Tuesday October 9th, the group comes to the Empty Bottle, a small but beloved Chicago venue on the West side of the city. The Silver Tongue will be there for coverage of what promises to be a wild night.
On top of being a prodigious music man, Critcheloe is a damn-fine director, capable of creating DIY videos that fit the music and captivate the audience in their absurdity.
