Download Den: Jim James – “Know Til Now”

Jim James

Welcome to The Silver Tongue’s Download Den.

Here is where we will pass along the most intriguing and worthwhile songs that we’ve been fortunate enough to discover. Many are songs we’ve been obsessing over, while others simply snuck up and got their hooks in us. We’re not concerned with genre limitations or mere trendiness. We simply want to open the door for you to join us in listening to music that is making us excited about the power of a song. Check out the Download Den daily, and the least we can do is help soundtrack your day.

My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James is once again branching out onto his own, and this time he will be delivering a full-length debut LP, titled Regions of Light and Sound of God. The last time James put out a collection of solo material was 2009′s gorgeous acoustic Tribute To EP of George Harrison songs under his Yim Yames moniker.

Now, James will give us an album he hopes sounds “like it came from a different place in time…Perhaps sounding as if it were the past of the future.” The beautifully strange first single “Know Til Now” is our first glimpse into that backward-leaning future. Over the course of 6 minutes and 26 seconds, James utilizes shimmering synth notes, his soulful tenor, funked-out rhythm, faintly angelic vocal echos, quick bursts of Abba-esque glitz, and an extended jazzy coda to make good on his promise of intergalactic nostalgia.

Regions of Light and Sound of God will be released on February 5 via ATO Records. You can stream “Know Til Now” below, or you can grab a free download from www.jimjames.com for the price of an email address.
