Listen: Fiona Apple – “Dull Tool” from This Is 40 Soundtrack

Fiona Apple

With the lines “You’re more likely to get cut with a dull too than a sharp one. You stuck around, you stuck around,” and the chorus, “You don’t kiss when you kiss, you don’t fuck when you fuck, you don’t say what you mean, you don’t talk loud enough,” Fiona Apple has officially entered this year’s Oscar race with her contribution to the This Is 40 OST.

“Dull Tool” finds Fiona in a scorned and righteously pissed disposition, and, as always, the music reaps the benefits when our heroine is hurting. The song is anything but a The Idler Wheel… throwaway vying for mainstream commercial appeal in a blockbuster Judd Apatow comedy. Apple finds a way to jab “Dull Tool” with her characteristic lyrical blunt force, and she fleshes it out with an adventurous production and orchestral flair every bit as thrilling as the ten songs on her “Best of 2012″ contender, The Idler Wheel….

The This Is 40 OST will be out on December 11 via Capitol Records, while the film open everywhere on December 21.
