U2 Tops the List of 2009 Money Makers

February 28, 2010

U2 surpasses all as the biggest earning act in the United States of 2009.

According to Billboard’s Top 40 Money Makers list, the veteran Irish rockers raked in $109 million from record sales, touring and royalties.  Much of that was boosted by the band’s 360 world tour, which is still underway.  U2’s heavyweight rock status has been solidified not only by the 2009 Money Makers title, but also by their being recently named North America’s most popular touring act of 2009.

Accompanying U2 on the top 5 list were the Boss, Bruce Springsteen ($57.6 million), Queen of Pop, Madonna ($47.2 million), Aussie hard rockers, AC/DC ($43.6 million) and dance pop phenom, Britney Spears ($38.8 million).  Coldplay were the biggest earning UK band ($27.3 million).

Billboard’s formula for working out the list is “top secret” but is based around money earned from all methods of selling music, along with publishing and touring. The 2009 list is the fourth edition of the chart-compiler’s annual countdown of the highest earners in music.

Jon Bon Jovi ‘Full Circle’ Tour, Researching Homeless

February 26, 2010

Jon Bon Jovi will be touring this year in support of his latest release, Full Circle, but this time, he’ll be doing more than simply passing between arena-stadium and hotel.

The rock veteran will be visiting as many homeless shelters and programs as time allows in hopes of getting ideas and inspiration to shape his own work with the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation.  This foundation, established in 2006, is a Philadelphia-based charity that fights homelessness by building affordable housing, establishing community kitchens and cleaning up vacant lots in blighted neighborhoods.  It has thus far built more than 150 units of affordable housing, but Bon Jovi recognizes that various problems of homelessness require different solutions.  And so, he is setting out, seeking possible solutions for helping others.

Jon Bon Jovi says, “This time, because of my foundation’s work over the last six years building affordable housing, on my days off and when the opportunity arises … I will go do shelters and try to learn more about the issue and how to combat it.”

Last week, before kicking off the tour with two shows at Seattle’s Key Arena, Bon Jovi toured one of the city’s most well-recognized homelessness programs, a building run by the Downtown Emergency Service Center.

He is scheduled early next month to tour Skid Row in Los Angeles with Steve Lopez, the Los Angeles Times columnist who wrote “The Soloist” – the book-turned-movie about a schizophrenic, homeless and wildly talented cellist named Nathaniel Ayers (played by Jamie Foxx).

Bon Jovi’s greater awareness shows itself in the latest album, which features “Working for the Working Man” and other songs inspired by the economic meltdown and political turmoil around the world.

The 47 year old rock star doesn’t fault himself for not getting an earlier start on addressing the world’s suffering.  “I don’t think I was ready for it,” he said. “When you’re a boy in a rock band, you want to go out and see the world and do all the great things you’re supposed to do when you join a rock band. Now there’s another aspect to it. There’s just more to be said and done, and the difference that can be felt on the trail that you’ve made.”
