Marilyn Manson Releases New Video for ‘Running to the Edge of the World’

Marilyn Manson’s latest video for ‘Running to the Edge of the World’ has become the center of a mini online controversy.
Near the end of video Manson is depicted beating a bloodied female. Several blogs and websites have denounced the video for “promoting domestic violence”. The video was directed by Nathan Cox and Marilyn Manson.
Manson is currently on tour in support of his seventh studio album, The High End of Low, which was released May 2009.

I’m sorry, but this does NOT promot domestic violence. I love this song and video. You can’t take a fictional video and make it look as though ‘domestic violence’ is his real problem. Perez Hilton really beats on this poor guy, and it’s bullshit. The video is telling a story. I mean, you wouldn’t go all the violent-film makers out their promoters of violence. NO, they just win a bunch of awards. The video is amazing, and so is the song.

i almost feel bad for him, trying to remain edgy and relevant to The Youth Of Today. its too bad he can’t move on and grow as an artist instead of rehashing his (debatable) glory days. the song itself is just another ‘man that you fear’ and the video is a poor attempt to tug at immature heartstrings and piss off adults.

@Emily: If you had any critical thinking skills, you would be able to recognize that Manson was never about “shock”. The band is a concept band; performance art directed at the pop music audience. It has a message, nothing is done to intentionally piss people off, it is done for the sake of artistic expression. Artists make art for themselves, a nobody else.
This is not a new consept,so stop whinin about it!

All these websites are just giving him air time. If they wanted him to be ignored then they wouldn’t write about it. Simple as that. he’s not promoting domestic violence. If he wanted to, he’d be on myspace right now advertising it.
Where in the video does it say ‘Do This’ i can understand why people think it would premote domestic violence however you have to look at it for what it really is, a music video (art).
The video will probably not be shown on television so the only people that would see it are people searching for it because they are either fans of his or the attraction to hearing it contains ‘domestic violence’ brings you to it.
If you want to get technical about disecting the video you could say that at the end of the video Marilyn Manson is shown in the same place as the woman who was beaten. Meaning that no matter how much he hurts a person he hurts himself so much deeper or feels in the same.
People need to stop being so petty about things and learn to respect peoples visions if you dont agree with it then move away its as simple as that.
I guess I can speak up here since I am almost 40 and a Fan of Manson. I loved it. I listen to his music, I READ the lyrics, I watch his interviews, I read his book, and that is how you get an Understanding of what his ART is all about. More should try it.
This video is not any more shocking then what you see in the Movies now a days.
Well personally I think that Videos are of course a work of art. That being said there is always a limit as to how far an artist should go to deliver a message, Its very debatable weather it is to far or not, I think realistically the video is based at Adults so sorry Emily but your comment is particularly void. We should also rememberthat most of his Videos have been genrally more Adult themed than any other. It is quite brutal, but so are aot of things. Like Saw for instance, The world seems to thrive on violent movies so is there really anything wrong with a violent music video?

Is this really any worse than when Lady Gaga or the Dixie Chicks (or whoever) makes videos about killing men as an act of revenge (or with some of Gaga’s stuff apparently just for fun)?
This video portrays in grisly detail the process of being hurt/abused to the point that you want to return the favor . . . without any humor or glamour involved. And I think that’s what really disturbs people. I’ll admit, it disturbed me . . . first time in a long time a music video has done that. Even Rammstein’s latest video which is basically a porno didn’t shock me like it did some people . . . I was able to see the humor in it. There is no humor in this . . . and I don’t think there was meant to be.
But . . . let’s play fair . . . there have been many, many songs and even videos made with the theme of taking revenge on (yes, even killing) an ex-lover. It’s not an all male thing (and how could people forget that MM has always had an androgynous image anyway?). And while it’s not the most pleasant thing in the world . . . I think the reason this video disturbs people while others pass by unnoticed is that this one portrays it in the most brutally honest way possible. It doesn’t laugh it off or try to make it look sexy. It shows how ugly the betrayal is . . . and then it shows how ugly the revenge is. I have to respect that, even if watching it makes my stomach churn.
You people are small minded and retarded if you think this is ok. A bunch of pathetic, no name, worthless, loser followers are what you are. A group of emo “I wish I could be cool but I will never fit in” rejects who need to get busy slitting their own wrists to better this world. I look at all of your supportive comments and I think to myself… anyone that would think this was art or artistic expression is sick and depraved. I used to think Manson was an awesome artist who could teach us to think beyond and outside of the box, but this cry for attention from this washed up, old ass reject who has nothing left to offer but shit like this to make us talk about him disgusting. I’m sure all the supporters of Manson who have nothing better to do than light their palms on fire with lighters would think “oh, he’s such a troubled soul… he’s heartbroken… she asked for it… she deserved it” are those who have the brain capacity of a snail. Ok. Just because Manson does something that you don’t agree with and you’re too close-minded to attempt to see the meaning behind the song just proves his point in his music. The fact that most people today are ignorant and set in their ways and any type of depiction of an obscured message is not worth the time of day. Instead of wasting time criticizing something that clearly you are way too idiotic and this means you, “For the Retards,” why don’t you take a good hard look in the mirror and put down your Danielle Steele book and see that you may be more worthless and less fit to live than millions like those you slander and have no idea what you’re talking about.
He’s an artist and a good one at that. He may not be your highly acclaimed Taylor Swift (who makes her living by singing about getting her heart broken as you were criticizing Manson’s fans for) but his songs have way more of a meaning than any of the shit you attempt to call music. So while you may can try to cover up all of your abandonment issues and fact that you have no real say in how your life goes and the only possible way you feel that you can overcome something is by comenting on things that you looked on Google for in the first place, remember this: Before you try to convince everyone that you’re such a smart person who has seen the world, stop waiting tables or making Big Macs and (as hard as it may be for your brain to comprehend) accept the fact that there’s more to life than writing flames about someone who is clearly far more intellectual than you.

This is either some sort of authentic expression or another ploy to get people talking about how “shocking” he is again. Someone else posted that Manson was never about shock– but one of the initial reasons the band formed the way it did was to test the boundaries of the media and censorship– in a way Manson’s art IS his shock value, his ability to test our boundaries and make us see things in a way we never would have before. That’s one of the reasons why I appreciate him, but that’s also one of the reasons why he is not as relevant anymore.
As for this song and his new image, I think it takes some getting used to. I will admit the “waah my heart is broken” kinda of stuff is getting a little too emo for some people’s tastes, but Manson never was one to care about what other people have to say about him. If it’s how he feels I say go for it. And btw, if anyone has learned anything from Manson over the years it should be that just because something appears one way doesn’t mean that’s what it supposedly is. Manson never burned a Bible so that his fans would “hate” God, and this video is most certainly not promoting domestic violence. It probably has ties to the way he feels inside, broken, ravaged, angry. I’m not the biggest fan of his new stuff but I still support everything he does.
