Morningbell’s ‘Sincerely Severely’: A Musical Collage

November 7, 2009 · Print This Article

morningbellThe newest offering from psychedelic rock band, Morningbell, is far beyond what I expected. Sincerely, Severely is a fourteen track masterpiece, spanning musical genres with grace. The opening track “Let’s Not Lose Our Heads” erroneously led me to believe the band had settled on a beautiful sound that was a happy blend of Kings of Leon and The Flaming Lips. And had the following tracks continued in that vein I would have loved it.

Rather, the second track “Marching Off To War”, took off in a different direction, with sing-talking over African drum rhythms and a great screaming chorus soaked in reverb that gave me a warm cozy feeling. In fact, every track had its own sound and seemed to fit perfectly into its own unique genre, spanning psychedelic, disco, soul, classic rock, pop, funk and dance, just to name a few. Despite this plethora of musical styles, the album stays cohesive as a collection of work.

The musicianship on this album is top-notch. Every track was carried by some of the best bass playing I have ever heard. The guitar licks and riffs are perfectly spread throughout each song, not making guitar the driving force behind the music, but rather an occasional treat. When the band introduces a new instrument to the album it falls right into place and feels natural. This is one of the most musically talented groups I’ve had the pleasure of listening to.

Sincerely, Severely is available now on Orange Records of Gainesville. It’s an easy album to fall in love with, easily in the top 10 albums of the year. The band is on tour now. Go see them and hope you’re lucky enough to catch their trademarked 100 dollar light show.
