Apse’s ‘Climb Up’ Leaves You Breathless
November 25, 2009 · Print This Article
Apse’s Climb Up is a music immersion. Rhythmic, psychedelic, groovy, experimental — every song surrounds, envelops, and permeates the entirety of your being. This is not background music; it commands full focus. Apse’s trademark sound involves high swirling vocals and keyboard tones accompanied with prominent bass guitar and drums. Even slower songs like “All Mine” require concentration, as the melancholy keyboard and rhythmic drum may well remind you of guiltily trudging along a mud path while clasping your collar and glancing at a bleak sky whose cold wind blows dead leaves across your path.
Throughout the album, the ever-present musical movement and echoes, as displayed in “Rook,” convey a feeling of breathlessly running through a cavern. At times, this breathlessness feels like paranoia, at other times, elation. Intense and intriguing, Climb Up takes you through an awe-inspiring music journey.
