Pete Doherty Apologizes for Singing ‘Nazi’ Anthem in Germany

pete-doherty-gal-ema07Pete Doherty has apologized to the German fans for singing the Nazi anthem onstage at a concert in Munich.

The former Libertines frontman sang the controversial first verse of the German national anthem during a concert in Munich on November 28th. The guitarist received massive boos after singing “Deutschland, Deutschland ueber alles” at the concert that was broadcast live on Bavarian radio. Doherty incorporated the verse in a in a rendition of “Hit the Road Jack.”  He was removed from the stage five songs later.

Doherty’s spokesperson said that he was “unaware of the controversy” surrounding the anthem’s rarely used first verse.

In a letter published on the on3 website, his manager Adrian Hunter said the singer had “wanted to celebrate his appearance in Munich by assimilating and integrating with the crowd”. He continues to say,”Pete himself is from Jewish descent and has fought against racism and fascism with numerous organizations,” the letter said.”This is a subject he feels very strongly about.”

According to the BBC, public radio station Bayerischer Rundfunk stopped broadcasting from the on3 music festival when Doherty began singing his version of the anthem.
