Live Show Review: Revocation at the Masquerade

December 7, 2009 · Print This Article

DSC07758 Scion continues to show it’s continuous support of the Metal scene with an offering of free shows featuring established artist as well as up and coming bands.

Their latest show included Revocation and Black Dahlia Murders in Atlanta and Los Angeles on December 2nd and 3rd, 2009.  The Atlanta show was held at The Masquerade and the L.A. show was at the Roxy.

I had a pre-show interview with Revocation all lined up, but infamous Atlanta traffic, that got even more snarled than usual by a hard rain, made me miss out on that.  I did however make it to the venue in time to see the show!   I arrived just in time to secure my photo pass and make my way through the large metal contingency.   Not only were Revocation and Black Dahlia Murders playing the free show upstairs, but The Faceless and Dying Fetus were playing shows downstairs;  so the crowd was much larger than I expected.

Revocation hit the stage about 9:00 p.m. and took the crowd by storm with their Thrash / Tech death/Deathcore explosion
of whirlwind riffs and chaotic rhythm changes that evoked the spirits of bands like Death and Atheist. The highlights of the show were the songs “Dismantle the Dictator“and “Anthem of the Betrayed“.  Guitarist Dave Davidson unleashed a barrage of intricate fret wizardry with his frenzied riffs and blistering ambitious solos. The rhythm team of bassist Anthony Buda and drummer Philip Dubois, galloped through dynamic tempo changes and hook-laden grooves that swirled around Davidson incendiary rapid paced riffs.

After the show, they hung out at the merch table and talked to fans.  I approached them and had a chance to speak to Dave. “The Scion people flew us in for this Atlanta show and were flying us out to L.A. for the show tomorrow night,” said Davidson. He elaborated further on the tour saying, ” We are thrilled to be picked by Scion for the free Metal shows, they’ve really been taking care of us!”

If you missed the Atlanta or L.A. Scion show, Revocation has teamed up with France’s Hypno5e and The Binary Code for the “Metal as Art Tour” in January, which should be must see for any tech-death-thrash fan! For more Revocation news  and tour updates click HERE.
